What is the GrandPals Program?
GrandPals is an intergenerational program that connects an elementary school class with a small team of GrandPals (adults 55+) to engage in weekly, open conversations providing a path for connection and learning through storytelling.
Old School is the first affiliate organization in Atlantic Canada to participate in the national program, GrandPals, supported by the Centre for Studies and Aging and Health at Providence Care.
Who is this program for?
-
for teachers with grade five or six classes
-
for older adults (55+) in the community, or seniors in care homes
What are the benefits of this program?
Students develop empathy, an understanding of aging, and tools for communication. Some studies indicate that intergenerational learning opportunities can even improve school attendance and scores for students! GrandPals enjoy affirmed purpose and value in their unique identities and stories while also learning from and connecting with a younger generation they might not otherwise have a chance to meet.
