The Old School Bus

Arts programming is not accessible to all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, due to factors like cost, mobility challenges, or restrictive age offerings. There are too few opportunities for folks of all ages to create and appreciate art together, and we hope to see this change. We imagine a province where intergenerational, age-friendly, arts programming is accessible and available in all communities.

The Old School Bus is just the beginning.

The Old School Bus is not an ordinary bus, it has been retrofitted into a programming space designed to bring people together. Make art, paint the bus, sing with us, or learn a dance together. Our participatory programming makes it possible for the young and young at heart to take part and enjoy being creative together. Self-led expressions like letter writing, simple loom weaving, and coloring are available on board and we are open to tailoring the bus visit to your particular needs. Our bus is accessible via a lift and pending weather conditions some programming can happen outside of the bus.

Why a bus?

  • It enables travel to small communities with limited programming and performance offerings.

  • It serves as a storage space for our program resources and performance sets, props, and costumes.

  • It allows Old School to offer a unique celebration experience that will fund other intergenerational  programs.

  • It is an accessible, creative space for all.

  • It allows for indoor and outdoor programming.

  • It is a physical reinvention of an old school bus, just as Old School mandates.

Creative Communities Program

Our pilot project for The Old School Bus was started in 2023 as the Creative Communities Program. Originally funded by The New Horizons for Seniors Program, this program included visiting communities in the province with The Old School Bus for an afternoon. It is meant to inspire arts-related intergenerational opportunities within communities. Arts activities are facilitated by professional performers and educators, Claire and Erin, who are also the charity co-founders.
